Birds, Reptiles & Butterflies
The sanctuary boasts 225+ species of birds, such as the yellow-throated bulbul, grey heron, crested serpent eagle, and many more. Reptile lovers may spot the Indian star tortoise, mugger crocodile, and several snake species. Chinnar is also a butterfly haven, with 156 recorded species, including rare and endemic varieties.
With over 1,000 species of flowering plants, Chinnar’s landscape includes
- Dry deciduous forests – Sandalwood, acacia, tamarind
- Riparian forests – Terminalia arjuna, mango, and other water-loving trees
- Sholas – Small patches of evergreen montane forest in higher altitudes
- Grasslands – Rolling meadows in the upper reaches
Rivers and Waterfalls
Two perennial rivers, the Chinnar River and the Pambar River, nourish this otherwise dry ecosystem. The Pambar, rising in the Anamudi Hills, flows through the sanctuary, joining the Chinnar River at Koottar before entering Tamil Nadu’s Amaravati Reservoir. On its way, the river creates the picturesque Thoovanam Waterfalls, one of the top trekking destinations inside the sanctuary.
Trekking and Eco-Tourism
The Kerala Forest Department, together with local tribal eco-development committees, organizes a range of trekking and wildlife programs, such as:
- Guided treks to Thoovanam Waterfalls
- Nature walks along riverbanks and to watchtowers
- River trekking on the Pambar
-
- Visits to nearby tribal settlements, ancient dolmens, and a medicinal garden in Marayur
These experiences provide not just adventure, but also insight into the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem.
