Tucked away in the lush hills of Idukki, Sengulam, also known as Chenkulam, is a serene getaway just 15 km from Munnar. Chenkulam, derives its name from the naturally red pond (“chengu” meaning red, “kulam” meaning pond) that once existed here. Today, this peaceful spot in Idukki is home to the Sengulam Dam and Hydroelectric Project, built as a balancing reservoir using tailwater from the Pallivasal Power Station.
Perched at an altitude of around 600 feet, Echo Point is the perfect escape from the bustle of everyday life. The moment you step onto its lush green slopes, you’re welcomed by crisp mountain air scented with wildflowers and the earthy aroma of nearby tea gardens. On quiet, misty mornings, the lake reflects the rolling hills like a mirror, while birdsong and the gentle ripple of water create an atmosphere of calm.
Built as part of the Chenkulam Hydroelectric Project, the dam collects tailwater from the Pallivasal power station. The water is stored in a small reservoir and channelled through tunnels and penstock pipes to generate 51.2 MW of electricity — a fine example of nature and technology coexisting in harmony.
Beyond its power-generation role, the dam has become a favourite destination for travellers seeking tranquillity. Managed by the Kerala Hydel Tourism Centre, Sengulam offers:
Boating rates range from ₹400 for pedal boats to ₹1,100 for a 15-minute speedboat ride.
If you’re looking to escape Munnar’s crowds, Sengulam Dam is an ideal retreat. Whether you’re here for a peaceful picnic, thrilling boat rides, or to simply soak in the pristine mountain scenery, this hidden gem promises a refreshing experience in the lap of nature.
