Anayirankal Dam

Anayirankal Dam – A Tranquil Escape Near Munnar

Nestled just 28 km from Munnar, Anayirankal Dam is one of Idukki’s most picturesque getaways. Located close to the famous Chinnakanal (Powerhouse) Waterfalls, this hydroelectric dam and its serene reservoir are surrounded by undulating tea plantations, lush evergreen forests, and the breathtaking Anayirankal Lake.

Vast stretches of tea gardens, mostly owned by the Tata Tea group’s Kannan Devan plantations, spread across the slopes like a velvety green carpet, creating a truly enchanting sight. The tranquil ambiance and cool mountain air make it an ideal picnic spot for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat.

The name Anayirankal comes from the Malayalam words Ana (elephant) and Irangal (coming down). True to its name, herds of wild elephants often descend to the lake to drink water — a magical moment for wildlife lovers and photographers.
